14.02.10 - Narrabundah FC shine in Wollongong to claim cup
Local ACT side Narrabundah took out the annual 'Billy's Cup' tournament in
Wollongong recently recording a narrow 1-0 victory over Wollongong Olympic
to claim the silverware.
The tournament, which was originally scheduled to run over two days, was
truncated into one after the Illawarra Football Association (IFA) held
their season launch on the Saturday meaning that the fixtures needed to
take place the following day.
The Billy's Cup is a Cancer Council sanctioned annual event held early
February and over the years has generated thousands of dollars towards
Cancer research. The Cup is named after former Warilla Wanderers player
Billie Kyriakidis who was an instrumental part of the Wanderers promotion
to the Premier League in the 1990's.
Billie spent most of his sporting career at just two clubs, namely Warilla
Wanderers and Wollongong Olympic who were both part of the annual event.
Playing at King Mickey Park Narrabundah kicked off the tournament with a
3-1 win over Warilla Hotel in their semi-final match before downing
Wollongong Olympic by the only goal of a tight Final to claim the 2010
'Billy's Cup'.
Narrabundah Assistant Secretary Ken MacDonald said the trip was a
worthwhile experience.
"The weekend was basically about team bonding, enjoying a weekend away
with new team mates and playing some football the following day," MacDonald
said.
"The team bonding was especially prevalent off the field and it was
pleasing to win the Cup. If there was anything to take from the weekend, it
would be discovering our captain, Jose Exposito, can't keep his feet on or
off the pitch!" MacDonald joked.
Narrabundah's season continues in the Federation Cup where they have been
drawn in Pool D alongside Woden Valley, ANU FC and ACTAS.
